How to Beat an Afternoon Slump

By Amanda Sides on Jun 11, 2016

It doesn't matter how busy we are or how revved up we are about the work we're doing: sometimes, when 3:00pm hits, we feel like hitting the floor.

The afternoon slump can damage our productivity if it means we're working more slowly, less carefully, and with a bad attitude. It also ruins our mood as we fight the urge to take a nap.

This grogginess doesn't have to put the brakes on a day that's nowhere near over. Here are five ways to beat it — or prevent it.

Eat right.

A slump can be an indication that we've run out of fuel. There's a strong temptation to give it a quick fix with some caffeine or sugar, but that's not doing you any favors in the long run. Take a look at your breakfast: hopefully it's not just a sugar-rush like a donut or a bagel. Start your day with good, healthy food, and keep healthy snacks (fruit, veggies and hummus, or nuts) at your desk.

Walk around.

When you feel like lying down, get up and get moving. It'll change your perspective and boost your energy.

Take a break.

Better yet, schedule them into your day and use those few minutes to get away from your computer screen.

Try these yoga poses for desk workers right there on your office floor.

Sleep well.

Obviously, waking well-rested leads to a more energetic day. Practice going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, and eliminate stimulating activities (like work!) right before bed.
