One of the great things about being a solopreneur is that, quite often, our work can travel with us! (One of the downsides: our work usually HAS to travel with us. But still.) We don't need to tie ourselves to one place to do what we do best.
Because of this, we might find ourselves working when we're on vacation. There's nothing wrong with that as long as we still enjoy the trip, rather than letting work take over, especially if we're traveling with loved ones. Here are four essential steps for how to balance work and vacation.
I do this to the fullest extent I can before any trip, sometimes starting weeks in advance. If there's anything extra you can do before you leave, do it: scheduling social media posts, preparing emails that need to be sent, ordering items you'll need after you return, meeting or talking with certain clients, and so on. If you can delegate tasks to be completed while you're away, do so.
If there are people who need to know you'll be away and maybe not as attentive to your email as normal, let them know. Otherwise, everyone else can operate under the illusion that it's all business as usual — that's half the fun.
Arrange for a Solid Internet Connection
Depending on where you're traveling, you can't assume that every hotel or B&B is going to have high-speed internet for you. Ask before you book, and make sure you locate a local backup plan or two, like a coffee shop or an internet cafe. You don't want to spend half of your work time looking for WiFi. Not only is it a waste of time, it's going to build your frustration and make your vacation less enjoyable for you and those who are traveling with you.
Make a Schedule
Before you leave, talk to your family or travel partners and let them know that you intend to work a bit throughout the vacation. Set aside work-specific time during which your travel partners can do something on their own and know not to interrupt you. Perhaps this means getting up a couple of hours earlier than everyone else if you don't want to miss any of the adventure.
Skip the Non-Essential Tasks
Don't do anything "extra" during your trip. Do what needs to be done, and do it well, but leave the rest for when you return.
